Mrs. McCarthy is originally from Jacksonville, FL. She went to the University of Florida where she received a bachelor’s degree in special education, and a master’s degree in early childhood education. After teaching in Gainesville, FL for three years, Mrs. McCarthy moved to Atlanta with her husband, Shaun, who is the STEM teacher at Oak Grove, and daughter, Stella, now a 8th grader at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School. Since that 2005 move, Buster (a 4th grade student at Oak Grove Elementary) and Elsie (a 2nd student at Oak Grove) have joined the family. Also during that time, Mrs. McCarthy earned an educational specialist’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Lincoln Memorial University.
Directly before coming to Briar Vista, Mrs. McCarthy worked as a special education teacher at Coralwood School where she taught all grades in her 10 years there, and served as a mentor to new teachers and a supervisor to graduate students completing their student teaching. She also served on the School Council, the leadership team, and as grade level chair, science chair, and math chair for many years.
Mrs. McCarthy is very involved at her parish, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
. She serves on the Pastoral Council
and is a Eucharistic Minister. For the past five years, Mrs. McCarthy has joined IHM’s Mustard Seed Communities
outreach to serve children in Jamaica with disabilities who have been abandoned. IHM’s group works with Mustard Seed Communities one week each year to provide these children with a safe place to live where they can receive proper care and therapy. This charity is very close to her heart and she looks forward to returning each year.
Mrs. McCarthy enjoys traveling with her family back to sunny Florida
, and tolerates yearly trips to the chilly north of her husband’s youth (Tupper Lake
, NY). She also enjoys yoga, running, photography, the Fightin’ Gators
, and reading on her Nook.
